Native American Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Providers: SELF-PACED ONLINE COURSE

1 Jan 2022 - 31 Dec 2022
Indigenous people across North America, including in the lands that now comprise the United States, have experienced devastating intergenerational trauma brought about settler-colonialism and exacerbated by continuing discrimination and racism. Despite this oppression, hundreds of Tribal Nations continue to thrive as sovereign entities within the boundaries of the US, including the 27 federally-recognized tribes in Nevada. There are tens of thousands of Native Americans living in Nevada, both inside and outside of tribal communities, and behavioral health care providers can expect to be called upon to provide services for individuals seeking or referred for care from time to time. This self-paced, online course will briefly cover some of the root causes of the trauma mentioned above and its effects on indigenous peoples, and illuminate some of the challenges this presents for treatment engagement and trust building. The course will offer examples of cultural manifestations of mental health impacts within tribal communities in the context of a recent case study of gambling attitudes and behaviors in Nevada tribal communities. Finally, strategies and resources for engaging and serving Native American clients on behavioral health issues will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will learn about some of the root causes of generational trauma within tribal communities brought about by settler-colonialism, and the resulting potential challenges of treatment engagement and trust-building.
2. Participants will learn about potential cultural manifestations and impacts within tribal communities in the context of a recent case study of attitudes and behaviors associated with gambling and problem gambling in Nevada tribal communities.
3. Participants will learn about strategies and resources for engaging and serving Native American clients on behavioral health issues.
